In the British Virgin Islands (BVI)

The wind swept and wildly beautiful British Virgin Islands, or BVI, are located in the Caribbean Sea just east of Puerto Rico and are part of the West Indies in the Leeward Island chain. The capital, Road Town, Tortola, lies just 8 miles east of St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands. Apart from Tortola, the main, inhabited islands of the BVI are Virgin Gorda, Anegada & Jost Van Dyke.

About fifty other islands make up the balance and all except Anegada are mountainous and of volcanic origin.

The British Virgin Islands are amongst the most popular Caribbean vacation destinations, offering one of the finest sailing territories anywhere ... and are home to the world's largest yacht charter fleet. Nature trails to scuba diving, windsurfing, bone fishing, underwater photography, sailing regattas, surfing or bicycle races ... you will find it all in the British Virgin Islands.

Much of Tortola's original subtropical forest was cleared for sugar cane production in the 1700s.  The growing of sugar cane has virtually ceased and production is now only enough to supply one of the original rum distilleries in Cane Garden Bay to the north.

Today cacti, mango trees, hibiscus, bougainvillea, frangipani and wild tamarind dominate the arid hillsides, while mangroves and palm trees are found around the shores.

Soper's Hole at West End, Tortola is one of three principal harbor / anchorages on Tortola and is home for Moab.  Soper's Hole retains its quaint charm while being a center of activity.

Surrounded by small mountains like Frenchman's Cay, Soper's Hole imparts a great sense of place and physical intimacy.  At the same time, its opening to a sea of islands, including nearby St. John and Jost Van Dyke stirs an alluring anticipation of coming adventure.

Just a few miles to the north of Soper’s Hole lie Green Cay, Little Tobago, Tobago, Jost Van Dyke, Little Jost Van Dyke, Guana Island, Great Camanoe and Scrub Island.

To the east and southeast of Soper’s Hole and within a few hours sail are the rest of the BVIs including Norman, Peter, Salt, Cooper ,Ginger Islands and last and perhaps the most beautiful, Virgin Gorda with its scenic North Sound and famous smooth rock formations “The Baths”.

Popular anchorages that are on the “must visit” list include The Bight at Norman Island where you can experience the Willie T, a raucous floating bar and restaurant and Pirates (formerly Billy Bones) bar and bistro on shore. The original Foxy’s, once a shack, is now an upscale entertainment and fine dining spot at the Great Harbour beach on Yost Van Dyke.

A couple of miles west of Foxy’s on White Beach is the infamous Soggy Dollar beach bar and restaurant where the BYC burgee is prominently hung.  It’s an endless chain; Sandy Cay, Marina Cay Trellis Bay, Deadman’s  Bay, The Bitter End and the fabled Cane Garden Bay.  And at Apple Bay, Tortola, don’t miss the Bomba Shack’s full moon party

If all this weren’t enough, St Maarten, St. Kitts, St. Barts, Antigua are only a days sail further east.  From there south, it’s easy reaching to the “Down Islands” of St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada, Barbados and eventually Trinidad and the Dutch ABCs.
